Pepsi’s Cindy Crawford Ad: The 1992 Super Bowl Spot Built Around a New Can

A sports car pulls up at a dusty roadside cafe, and Cindy Crawford steps out in a white tank top and denim cutoffs. Two young boys watch as she buys a Pepsi from a vending machine, opens it and drinks. One of them says, “Is that a great new Pepsi can or what?” and a narrator introduces “a whole new way to look at Pepsi and Diet Pepsi.”

The spot debuted during the Super Bowl in 1992 and was directed by Joe Pytka, one of the most prolific commercial and music-video directors of the time. Its actual purpose was modest: it was made to promote a new design for the can.

It still gets remembered. Crawford recreated it for the Super Bowl decades later, and the original remains a standard example of how one image, a famous face and a soft drink, can stay in memory long after the product’s packaging has changed.
